Cytology

Cellularity and background

<<< Introduction to cytology

The cellularity of a cytological specimen depends on the sampling technique used, the site and nature of the tissue sampled and operator experience, however, tumours often yield a more cellular sample than benign tissue.

The background within which the cells are seen can also give clues. If there is necrotic debris in the background, this can suggest malignancy, although it may be seen in association with other conditions e.g. granulomatous inflammation.
